    WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?

    The Brecon Beacons National Park is an area of Mountain, Moorland and River lakes and the priority of this course will be to provide a range of skills relevant to survival in this unpredictable Mountain moorland environment. You be taking on important survival tasks such as Shelter Building (natural and using tarps), Food preparation including animal skinning and bread making (foraging possible dependent on time of year), Fire lighting to include building a range of fire types, using flint and steel (to include foraging for suitable natural material to assist), Tracking and Navigation - night and day techniques use of map/compasses (this may include a night navigation exercise to find your way back to the established camp/bivi location. This is followed by an exciting, challenging adventure journey to include various overland travelling techniques - set up Abseiling, Tyrolean Traversing, Short rope techniques.

    • The base for the New Bivi Site is Blaen Cwm Banw, a glaciated valley high in the Brecon Beacons. The site is a wood valley with limited access, close to a mountain stream. This is not a campsite (NO TOILET or WATER) and must be used with care and a strong conservation code.
    • On arrival survey the site and prep the following: toilet pit location, fire pit site, shelter / bivi area, search for drinking water location and discuss water collection.
    • You will be shown a range of shelter/ bivi options and discuss tech / building systems, and also forage for materials to assist in the construction. Locate the fire pit area in relation to the site and weather and type of fire, forage for material and collect timber. Also discuss safety when using axe and saw.
    • Learn fire lighting skills with emphases on prep and kindling material, wood type and burning properties, fire lighting flint and steel and conventional systems.
    • Food prep/hygiene to include skinning pigeon / rabbits / veg prep and general dinner prep to produce a Hunter stew. Learn about care when cooking and use of wood prep to maintain fire for next day. Bread making and night lines for fishing if possible.
    • After dinner, map and compass skills, pacing and bearing timing etc, and a night navigation exercise. > Settle down for evening with a few beers around the fire.
    • Day two, light fire and breakfast prep. Clean site and move to an Adventure Journey @ Blaen y Glyn Gorge, which consist of Abseiling a waterfall (not in the water), Tyrolean Traverse, Short Rope Tech, Belay systems (this is a skills based day with the emphasis on acquiring the tech to set up and manager).
    • Course review and depart at approx 12pm.

    A range of activities can be built in to this weekend itinerary, including but not limited to:
